Rachel Lynde was an Avonlea resident, the widow of Thomas Lynde and the mother of Robert and Billy Lynde. She was a gossip and lived with her best friend Marilla Cuthbert at Green Gables. Marilla and Rachel adopted the twins Dora and Davey Keith. Marilla died when the two were still small. Rachel then moves with them to her friend Hetty King. When she suffered a stroke, she recovered from her son, Robert Lynde. Back in Avonlea, she suffered a stroke again and could not speak. She was the chair of the Avonlea Sunday School teachers.
